Biography

Ed Béchard-Torres is a professor at Lincoln Alexander School of Law. He has a keen interest in the intersection of constitutional law and political economy. His research projects explore the role of courts in fulfilling socio-economic human rights and the effects of 'transformative' constitutional projects on corporate law. His comparative legal research spans jurisdictions in the Global South and North. Before joining the faculty, Béchard-Torres was a Scholar in Residence at New York University's Center for Human Rights and Global Justice. He holds a Doctor of Civil Law from McGill University, a Master of Laws from the University of Cambridge, and a joint Bachelor of Civil Law and Bachelor of Laws from McGill. He has experience clerking at the Supreme Court of Canada and the Quebec Court of Appeal, as well as practicing commercial litigation in Quebec. Notably, he contributed to the Vavilov and Bell appeals at the Supreme Court. Béchard-Torres was appointed to the Human Rights Expert Panel of the Court Challenges Program in 2022 to aid in significant human rights litigation.
