Biography

Professor Ed Boyden completed undergraduate degrees in Physics and Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences, and a Master of Engineering at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). He completed his PhD studies as a fellow in the Neurosciences Program at Stanford University. His research focuses on developing novel tools for mapping and analyzing brain activity at a deep mechanistic level, aiming to repair and simulate brain functions. His laboratory has pioneered technologies such as expansion microscopy and optogenetic tools, which are essential in understanding and controlling the dynamics of neural activity. Professor Boyden is committed to distributing these tools freely to the scientific community to promote systematic analysis of brain computations and seek new therapeutic strategies for neurological and psychiatric disorders.
