Biography

Dr. Ed Buchel is currently the provincial surgery specialty lead at Shared Health Manitoba and serves as professor and head of the Department of Surgery at the Max Rady College of Medicine, University of Manitoba. He is the surgery site director at the Winnipeg Health Sciences Centre. Dr. Buchel completed his medical training at the University of Manitoba, followed by a residency in general surgery at St. Vincent’s Hospital Medical Center in Manhattan, New York. He then completed a fellowship in plastic surgery at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota, and further training in reconstructive microsurgery in Taipei, Taiwan. In 2001, Dr. Buchel joined the Mayo Clinic in Scottsdale, Arizona, where he served as the program director for the microsurgery fellowship before returning to Winnipeg in 2004. Since then, he has held various roles, including associate professor and section head of plastic surgery, and program director of the plastic surgery residency. He also directed the microvascular reconstruction fellowship at the University of Manitoba from 2006. Dr. Buchel has been editor-in-chief of the Canadian Journal of Plastic Surgery and currently focuses on clinical practice in reconstructive microsurgery for cancer and trauma patients, as well as general cosmetic and reconstructive plastic surgery.
