Biography

Ed Pulford is an anthropologist with a research focus on past and present socialism, transnational and cross-border connections in Eurasia, and issues of indigeneity in Northeast Asia. He completed his PhD in Anthropology at the University of Cambridge in 2017 and joined the University of Manchester in 2020. Pulford has held postdoctoral research positions at Hokkaido University in Japan and the University of Amsterdam in the Netherlands. His book, 'Mirrorlands' (Hurst, 2019), presents an anthropological historical account of life in the borderlands between China and Russia, arguing that senses of nationhood and identity emerged in reference to historical precedence. His upcoming work, 'Past Progress' (Stanford University Press, 2024), explores how socialist projects in China, the Soviet Union, and North Korea have influenced local communities' perceptions of time and progress. Additionally, he hosts a podcast series on East Asian Studies, contributing actively to discussions around these topics.
