Dr. Eda Birol

Biography

Eda Begum Birol is a research scholar and PhD student at DumoLab Research (DLR) within the Stuart Weitzman School of Design at the University of Pennsylvania. Her research focuses on the potential of bio-based materials and additive manufacturing techniques, particularly with earthen materials such as clay. With a B.Arch in Architecture and an MSc in Matter Design Computation from Cornell University, Eda has a strong background in architectural design and computational fabrication. She was a research associate at the Sabin Lab, where she concentrated on the development of novel clay building blocks, termed 'PolyBrick', for architectural applications. Additionally, Eda's education includes an MSc in Civil Systems Engineering from Johns Hopkins University. She is dedicated to investigating how digital fabrication and computational tools can rejuvenate the use of earthen materials in design practice and the introduction of innovative biomaterials.
