Edith Houben graduated in Biology from Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam in 1999, specializing in Molecular Cellular Biology. She conducted her PhD research on membrane protein biogenesis in the model organism Escherichia coli in the field of Molecular Microbiology at Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam. After her PhD, she worked as a postdoctoral research fellow on signal sequence-mediated protein secretion in Bacillus subtilis. In 2004, she moved to Switzerland to engage in tuberculosis research as a postdoctoral fellow at the Biozentrum, University of Basel, funded by a long-term FEBS fellowship. In 2007, she received a Veni grant from NWO-ALW and returned to Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam to study type VII secretion systems in pathogenic mycobacteria. By 2013, she obtained a VIDI grant, which enabled her molecular biochemical analysis of mycobacterial transport systems and led to her appointment as Assistant Professor. In 2018, she was promoted to Associate Professor. Her expertise aligns with the UN Sustainable Development Goals.
