Biography

Edith Snook is a professor at the University of New Brunswick, with a research and teaching focus on early modern English literature, particularly women’s writing. She has developed research expertise in bodily histories, the history of medicine, and recipe culture, especially in the context of the Maritimes. Her prominent works include 'Women, Beauty, and Power in Early Modern England: A Feminist Literary History' (Palgrave, 2011), which was awarded the 2011 Outstanding Academic Title by Choice, and 'Women, Reading, and Cultural Politics in Early Modern England' (Ashgate, 2005). She has published extensively on figures such as Margaret Cavendish, Grace Mildmay, Jane Grey, and Elizabeth Isham. Snook is involved in the SSHRC-funded Early Modern Maritime Recipes database in collaboration with Dr. Lyn Bennett from Dalhousie University, which collects print and manuscript recipes circulating before 1800 in Canada's Maritime provinces. Additionally, she has served as an editor for 'Cultural History of Hair in the Renaissance' (Bloomsbury, 2018) and is currently working on her project titled 'Culture and Physic', which examines how medical practices influenced literary forms among early modern English women.
