Biography

Edmund Weiner joined the staff of the Oxford English Dictionary in 1977 and became co-editor with John Simpson for the second edition published in 1989. He subsequently took on the role of Deputy Chief Editor in 1993, overseeing the final published form of the quarterly published OED entries and their etymological and grammatical aspects on OED Online. Weiner studied at the University of Oxford, focusing on a thesis regarding the revisions of Richard Rolle's English Psalter Commentary. He has taught Old and Middle English to undergraduates at Christ Church and has been involved with numerous summer programs run by the Oxford University Department of Continuing Education. His notable publications include 'The Oxford Guide to English Usage' (1983) and 'Oxford Dictionary of English Grammar' (1994, co-authored with Sylvia Chalker). Weiner has published various papers on historical lexicography and early modern English, and he maintains a blog titled 'Philoloblog' which discusses topics including Tolkien's use of language and philological subjects.
