Biography

Edoardo Charbon received his Diploma in Electrical Engineering from ETH Zurich in 1988, his M.S. from the University of California at San Diego in 1991, and his Ph.D. from the University of California at Berkeley in 1995. He has consulted for numerous organizations including Bosch, Texas Instruments, and Sony and was a chief architect at Canesta Inc., responsible for developing a wireless 3-D CMOS image sensor. He joined the faculty at EPFL in 2002 and became a full professor in 2015. He held a full professor chair at Delft University of Technology from 2008 to 2016, focusing on cryogenic electronics and quantum computing. His work includes the creation of deep-submicron CMOS technology and advancements in 3-D vision, LiDAR, and super-resolution microscopy among others. Charbon has authored or co-authored over 500 papers, holds 30 patents, and has received several awards including the IISS Pioneering Achievement Award in 2023. His research interests include SPAD imaging, ultra-fast imaging, quantum imaging, and CMOS design.
