Edoardo Mazza has been a full professor of Mechanics at the Institute of Mechanical Systems in the Department of Mechanical and Process Engineering since January 1, 2010. He studied at the Department of Mechanical Engineering at ETH Zurich, where he also completed his doctoral dissertation at the Institute of Mechanics. His doctoral thesis on the mechanics of microstructures received an award, the ETH Medal. After earning his doctorate, he worked from 1997 to 2001 in industry, where he led the steam turbine development group at Alstom Power, responsible for the mechanical analysis of stationary and rotating turbine components. In November 2001, he was appointed as an assistant professor and in 2006 as an associate professor at ETH Zurich. He has also led the Department of Experimental Continuum Mechanics at Empa since 2006. From 2016 to 2020, he served as the President of the KdL (Conference of Faculty Members) and from 2021 to 2023, he was the head of the D-MAVT, the Department of Mechanical and Process Engineering at ETH Zurich. His research focuses on solving challenging continuum mechanics engineering problems, developing novel experiments for mechanical characterization of structures and materials. He investigates the mechanical behavior of soft organs and tissues in the human body concerning medical applications, quantifying chemo-physical factors of the extracellular matrix to analyze mechanical biology. He also examines synthetic and tissue-engineered materials, mesh implants, and stents regarding their mechanical biocompatibility.
The GRE is mandatory for students who did not obtain their Bachelor's degree in an EU/EFTA state. Some departments (e.g., Computer Science) have specific ECTS credit requirements in core subjects.
