Biography

Edward J. Bertaccini, MD, is a Professor in Anesthesiology and Intensive Care Medicine at Stanford University School of Medicine. A native of San Jose, California, he completed his undergraduate studies in Biochemistry and Quantum Physics at the University of California, Davis, graduating Summa Cum Laude. Dr. Bertaccini attended St. Louis University School of Medicine, completing an internship at the Santa Clara Valley Medical Center and pursuing an anesthesiology residency and subsequent ICU fellowship at Stanford University School of Medicine. He joined the faculty at Stanford in 1994 and has since established an internationally recognized program in molecular modeling of anesthetic action. Dr. Bertaccini's clinical expertise focuses on cardiac anesthesia and intensive care medicine at the VA Palo Alto Health Care System, where he served as director of the operating room and acting co-director of the intensive care units. His clinical efforts have significantly contributed to improving national cardiac surgery and intensive care outcomes.
