Biography

Edward Buskey is a Professor in the Department of Marine Science at the University of Texas at Austin. He holds a Ph.D. in Biological Oceanography from the University of Rhode Island, obtained in 1983. He joined the University of Texas Marine Science Institute in 1986 as a Research Scientist and was promoted to Professor in 1999. His research interests lie in marine science, specifically focusing on behavioral ecology of marine zooplankton and how sensory perception mediates their behavioral adaptations, such as locating food resources and avoiding predators. Buskey employs techniques like video microcinematography and automated video-computer methods for image motion analysis in his studies. He is currently involved in research on the adaptive value of swarming and schooling behavior of zooplankton in barrier reef systems in Central America and Australia, as well as the roles of planktonic grazers in harmful algal bloom dynamics. His ongoing studies have indicated that disruptions in grazer controls may have contributed to the unprecedented persistence of 'brown tide' algal blooms in Laguna Madre.
