Biography

Edward Crawley is the Ford Foundation Professor of Engineering at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). He served as the founding president of the Skolkovo Institute of Science and Technology in Moscow from 2011 to 2016, a new university focused on science and innovation. Prior to that, he was the Director of the Bernard M. Gordon - MIT Engineering Leadership Program, which aimed to enhance the quality of engineering leadership education and its competition in innovation. From 2003 to 2006, Crawley also served as the Executive Director of the Cambridge - MIT Institute, a joint venture funded by the British government and industry, focused on understanding and generalizing how universities serve as engines of innovation and economic growth. He has spent seven years as the Department Head of Aeronautics and Astronautics at MIT, where he led significant strategic realignments for the department. Crawley's research interests predominantly focus on architecture, design, and decision support optimization for complex technical systems, taking into consideration economic stakeholder constraints. He has been involved in various projects, including the design of systems for Moon–Mars human spaceflight and NASA's Earth observing systems.
