Dr. Edward Harcourt

Biography

Edward Harcourt is a Professor of Philosophy at the University of Oxford and a Fellow by Special Election at Keble College. His work primarily focuses on ethics, particularly within moral psychology. He has a keen interest in the intersections of ethics and philosophy of mind, delving into the intricacies of boundaries within ethical frameworks. His research also explores neo-Aristotelian perspectives along with the ethical dimensions involved in psychoanalysis and psychotherapy, highlighting moral emotions, love, and virtues. In addition to his main research interests, he investigates Nietzsche's ethics, mental health, and the philosophical aspects related to literature. Harcourt's contributions to the field are reflected in his numerous publications, including recent articles discussing morality, self-knowledge, and the implications of Wittgenstein's philosophy. He holds advanced degrees, having completed both his BPhil and DPhil at the University of Oxford, and has contributed significantly to the academic community through various roles, including Director (Interim) of Oxford's Institute of Ethics and AI, and Academic Director of the Royal Institute of Philosophy.
