Biography

Edward Hutchinson commenced his research career in molecular biology focusing on influenza viruses while a graduate student at the University of Cambridge. In 2009, he transitioned to the University of Oxford to continue his work on influenza with Ervin Fodor as a postdoctoral researcher at the Sir William Dunn School of Pathology, in conjunction with a Junior Research Fellowship at Worcester College (2010-2014). By 2016, he established his research group at the MRC-University of Glasgow Centre for Virus Research. Professor Hutchinson's research interests lie in understanding the factors that contribute to the infectiousness of respiratory viruses, with a particular focus on influenza viruses which are significant pathogens for both humans and domesticated animals. His work explores how the ability of these viruses to infect cells is a fundamental property, despite their small size making them more complex than they initially appear. Hutchinson employs a variety of methods in virology and molecular biology, including mass spectrometry and advanced imaging techniques.
