Dr. Edward Johns

Biography

Edward Johns is an Associate Professor in the Department of Computing at Imperial College London, where he leads the Robot Learning Lab. His research focuses on advanced robotics, particularly the intersection of robotics, machine learning, and computer vision. He specializes in robot manipulation, exploring how robots can physically interact with objects using arms and hands. His work has developed state-of-the-art capabilities for robot learning, enabling robots to learn new tasks from a single human demonstration and solve tasks using language-based reasoning. Before founding the Robot Learning Lab, Johns received his BA and MEng in Electrical and Information Engineering from the University of Cambridge and completed his PhD in computer vision at Imperial College London. He has published over 60 peer-reviewed papers with more than 4000 citations and has received several accolades, including the Royal Academy of Engineering Research Fellowship for his pioneering work on sim-to-real transfer and imitation learning. He also teaches graduate-level courses in reinforcement learning and has held positions such as Reader and Senior Lecturer at Imperial College. Johns contributes to multiple advisory boards within the robotics and AI sectors.
