Edward Mabaya is a senior research associate and assistant director of the Emerging Markets Program at the Charles H. Dyson School of Applied Economics and Management at Cornell University. With over a decade of experience in agricultural development and food security issues in Africa, Edward draws motivation from his childhood experiences in rural Zimbabwe, where he became involved in programs that aim to improve the lives of African farmers through agriculture. As the principal investigator of the African Seed Access Index, he conducts applied research in agriculture and agribusiness value chains in developing countries, particularly focusing on Sub-Saharan Africa. His research interests encompass agribusiness, seed systems, and agricultural input-output markets serving smallholder farmers. Edward has published extensively on these subjects and earned his MSc in 1998 and PhD in 2003 in agricultural economics from Cornell University. He also holds a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Zimbabwe, obtained in 1994. Active in the academic community, he served as the president of the African Association of Agricultural Economists from 2016 to 2019 and was recognized as one of the “2016 Top African Innovators to Watch” by Ventures Africa magazine. Additionally, Edward was a 2007 Archbishop Tutu Leadership Fellow and a 2016 Aspen Global Voices Fellow.
