Biography

Edward Ryan, Ph.D., graduated from Brooklyn College, CUNY, summa cum laude and Phi Beta Kappa, majoring in Psychology. He completed his M.A. and Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology at the University of Michigan. Currently, he is an Associate Clinical Professor in the Psychiatry Department at Yale School of Medicine, where he has made significant contributions through his work in private practice and as a training supervising psychologist at Yale’s Long-Term Care Clinic. Ryan has held various roles at the VA Connecticut Healthcare system, including Associate Chief Psychologist and Clinical Director, where he worked on programs for schizophrenia and psychosocial rehabilitation. Over the course of forty years, he has taught and supervised psychiatric residents and psychology graduate students, and his research focuses on inpatient treatment, therapeutic community, and the psychological aspects of meditation and spirituality. He is a Board member of the Insight Meditation Society and has published extensively in his field. His wife, Sylvia Forges-Ryan, is an internationally renowned poet, and Ryan has been deeply engaged in the practice of insight meditation for thirty years.
