Biography

Ed Sarath divides time teaching, scholarship, performing, composing, recording, and speaking, spearheading leadership initiatives aimed at bringing an expanded vision of creativity and consciousness development in musical study and education at large. Sarath is a professor in the Music Department of Jazz & Contemporary Improvisation and has been a founding faculty member and chair (1987-2007) at the University of Michigan School of Music, Theatre & Dance (SMTD). He is the director of U-M’s Program in Creativity and Consciousness Studies, which is an interdisciplinary network of colleagues interested in the inner workings of creativity and the foundations of consciousness. He founded and serves as president of the International Society for Improvised Music, an organization devoted to promoting awareness of the importance of improvisational studies in musical training for today's diverse world. His recent book, "Improvisation, Creativity, Consciousness: Jazz Integral Template Music, Education, Society" (SUNY/Albany, 2013), applies music principles to an emergent, consciousness-based worldview called Integral Theory in music. Sarath has also authored several other influential works and has been a frequent speaker at conferences and symposia around the world.
