Biography

Edwin L. Ferguson is a Professor in the Department of Molecular Genetics and Cell Biology at the University of Chicago, where he also serves as Assistant Dean of Academic Advancement in the Biological Sciences Division. His research focuses on understanding the mechanisms underlying pattern formation and cell fate specification, specifically utilizing Drosophila melanogaster as a model organism. Ferguson's lab investigates embryonic dorsal-ventral (D/V) axis patterning and the role of the Bone Morphogenetic Protein (BMP) family member Decapentaplegic (Dpp) in this process. Over the years, his laboratory has made significant discoveries regarding the conservation of D/V patterning mechanisms across arthropods and chordates, and identified the function of the Spemann organizer in Xenopus development. Ferguson's work has elucidated the genetic networks that confer robustness to D/V patterning systems and investigated the processes that maintain germ line stem cells in the adult ovary, which are essential for understanding stem cell biology and aging.
