Biography

Edwin D. Simpson joined the University of Bristol in early 2020 as a Senior Lecturer in natural language processing (NLP) and machine learning. Previously, he held postdoctoral positions at the Ubiquitous Knowledge Processing (UKP) lab at TU Darmstadt, Germany, from 2016 to 2020, and at the University of Oxford after completing his PhD there. His research focuses on NLP processes, particularly the interaction between machine learning models and human users to aggregate annotations from multiple, often unreliable sources. Simpson's work employs Bayesian methods and deep learning to manage uncertainties in small data sets and address high disagreement in ambiguous labeling tasks. He is particularly interested in applying his research towards disaster response and risk reduction, utilizing information from unstructured data sources like satellite imagery. Simpson has collaborated with industry partners and research organizations, emphasizing teaching new courses such as Text Analytics and Dialogue Narrative. He is a member of the Intelligent Systems research group at Bristol and has actively participated in various significant research projects.
