Biography

Edwin L. Thomas is the Professor of Materials Science and Engineering at Texas A&M University and holds the Erle Nye ’59 Chair II. He is a permanent member of the Hagler Institute for Advanced Study and a member of the National Academy of Engineering. His research focuses on various aspects of materials science, particularly in the areas of polymer material physics and engineering, photonic and phononic crystals, metamaterials, and microtrusses. His educational background includes a Ph.D. in Materials Science from Cornell University, with minors in Materials Engineering and Metallurgical Engineering, as well as a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Massachusetts. Thomas has been actively involved in exploring advanced characterization techniques, such as electron and X-ray diffraction, to address solid-state materials characterization challenges, and has published extensively in his field.
