Dr. Eeva Liisa Pelkonen

Biography

Eeva-Liisa Pelkonen is a Professor at Yale School of Architecture, where she has taught architectural design, history, and theory for thirty years. Her main pedagogical goal is to bridge the gap between architectural history and design, promoting an understanding that intertwines verbal and visual knowledge. She specializes in 20th Century European and American art and architecture, along with aesthetic theory and the history of ideas. Pelkonen is the author of several prize-winning publications, including 'Achtung Architektur! Image Phantasm Contemporary Austrian Architecture' (1996), 'Alvar Aalto: Architecture, Modernity, Geopolitics' (2009), which received the Alice Davis Hitchcock Prize, and 'Kevin Roche: Architecture Environment' (2011). She has co-edited 'Eero Saarinen: Shaping Future' (2006), awarded the Philip Johnson Award. Her recent books include 'Exhibit Exhibitions Transformed Architecture, 1948-2000' (2018) and 'Untimely Moderns: Modern Architecture Discovered Future Past' (2023). Currently, she is completing a manuscript titled 'Le Carré Bleu: Legendary Magazine Modern Art, Architecture, Urbanism'. Pelkonen has contributed essays and articles to several prominent journals and has considerable curatorial experience, having worked on exhibitions related to notable architects and movements. She has received support for her scholarly endeavors from various foundations and institutions.
