Dr. Efthimios Kaxiras

Biography

Efthimios Kaxiras is the John Hasbrouck Van Vleck Professor in the Department of Physics at Harvard University. His research focuses on the use of modern theoretical concepts in materials science, employing powerful computational methods to apply quantum theory to solids. The Kaxiras research group aims to explain experimental results in detail and predict new structures and interesting material behaviors. They tackle significant scientific questions such as the microscopic origins of complex phenomena in materials, including brittle-to-ductile transitions. Additionally, Professor Kaxiras is interested in addressing societal needs through the development of novel materials, particularly for efficient solar energy conversion and energy storage devices, as well as understanding the interactions between biomolecules like DNA and materials such as carbon nanotubes and graphene. His work contributes to fundamental insights into material behavior and provides practical solutions to energy and biomedical challenges.
