Biography

Eike-Henner Kluge is a professor in the Department of Philosophy at the University of Victoria specializing in the history of philosophy and applied ethics, particularly in the fields of biomedical ethics and health information ethics. Since 1989, he has served in various academic and consulting roles, including directing the Department of Ethics and Legal Affairs for the Canadian Medical Association. He is an expert witness in medical ethics and has provided his expertise in Canadian courts and to various health ministries, addressing issues such as the substitution of prescription pharmaceuticals for street opioids. Kluge has contributed significantly to discussions on military and police ethics and has held numerous positions, including being a delegate for the Canadian Bioethics Society and a member of the International Medical Informatics Association’s Working Group on Security of Health Information Systems. His contributions include the development of a Code of Ethics for Health Informatics Professionals, translated into nine languages, and a Handbook for the same. Kluge's research currently focuses on medical informatics, human tissue banking, and genetic engineering. He has received several awards, including the Award for Research Excellence from UVic's Faculty of Humanities and the Abbyann Lynch Medal for Bioethics from the Royal Society of Canada.
