Biography

El Bachir Affar leads the cellular signaling and cancer research unit at Maisonneuve-Rosemont Hospital and is a full professor at the Department of Medicine and an accredited professor at the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Medicine at the Université de Montréal. His research focuses on cellular signaling via ubiquitination, DNA, and chromatin-associated processes, including transcription and DNA repair, as well as the molecular bases of cancer. His team particularly studies the BAP1 gene, frequently mutated in certain cancer types. Affar employs functional genomics and proteomics to determine the functions and mechanisms of deubiquitinase enzymes, crucial for understanding their role in cancer biology and ubiquitin-mediated signaling.
