Biography

El Chenier is a Professor and Director of the Archive of Lesbian Oral Testimony at Simon Fraser University. Chenier began their academic journey at York University, where they studied English with a focus on women's social history. This experience led them to pursue graduate studies in the history of sexuality in twentieth-century Canada. They completed their doctoral studies at Queen's University in 2001 and subsequently held a postdoctoral fellowship at McGill University from 2001 to 2003. Chenier has been teaching at Simon Fraser University since 2004 and is also an associate faculty member in the Department of Gender, Sexuality, and Women's Studies. Their research interests include the history of sexuality and gender in Canada and the United States, with significant projects focusing on oral histories of butch/fem lesbian bar culture in post-war Toronto. Chenier has published extensively on topics ranging from moral panics and sexual assault to the experiences of immigrants in historical contexts, and they have contributed articles across various scholarly journals. In addition to their research, Chenier is actively involved in graduate supervision, guiding projects related to sexuality, gender, race, and activism.
