Biography

Ela Chakkarapani is an Associate Professor of Neonatal Neuroscience and the Director of the Centre for Academic Child Health at the University of Bristol. Her expertise lies in developing interventions for babies with perinatal brain injuries and assessing the impact of newborn brain injury on childhood brain development through MRI and clinical assessments. Currently, she balances her clinical responsibilities as a consultant neonatologist in the Regional Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at St Michael's Hospital, Bristol, with her academic commitments at the university. Chakkarapani's research focuses on translational health research, aiming to develop and evaluate brain-protective treatments for perinatal brain injury through clinical trials, and she leads the research efforts in her region's neonatal intensive care unit.
