Biography

Elaine Hyshka is an Associate Professor, Canada Research Chair in Health Systems Innovation at the University of Alberta's School of Public Health. Her research focuses on health services systems and population health, particularly in advancing public health approaches to substance use. Hyshka's interdisciplinary background and diverse methodological experience aim to generate new knowledge that advances health systems innovation and improves health outcomes. She emphasizes engaged scholarship, conducting work in partnership with individuals who have lived experience of substance use, poverty, homelessness, healthcare providers, health authorities, civil society organizations, and governments. Her work evaluates innovations in health systems designed to reduce substance use morbidity and mortality and critically analyzes determinants of public health policy change. With a PhD in Public Health Sciences from the University of Alberta, a Master of Arts in Sociology, and a Certificate in Addiction Studies from the University of Toronto, she has experience in research and policy development with municipal and federal governments in health systems. Hyshka has received multiple awards for her leadership in public health, including the Killam Accelerator Award, and has served as Co-Chair of Health Canada's Expert Advisory Group on Safer Supply.
