Biography

Eleanor Jones is an Associate Professor in the Department of Languages, Cultures and Linguistics at the University of Southampton. She awarded her PhD from the University of Manchester in January 2016 and has taught at universities in Manchester, Sheffield, and Birmingham before joining Southampton in September 2016. Her teaching focuses on the histories and cultures of the Portuguese-speaking world, with particular emphasis on critical theory and the intersections of race, gender, sexuality, and disability in these contexts. Her current research examines the role of British institutions, especially universities, in the structural marginalization of disabled people from the early twentieth century to the present. She is also engaged in comparative studies of British and Portuguese colonialism, exploring intersections of colonialism with the history of human sciences, race, and disability. In her role at Southampton, she actively participates in curriculum development and serves as the Equality, Diversity, and Inclusion representative for her department.
