Biography

Eleftheria (Ellie) Asimakopoulou joined Edinburgh Law School in 2024 as a Postdoctoral Research Fellow. She contributes to the Leverhulme Trust-funded project 'Taming Dark Energy EU Law' led by Professor Niamh Nic Shuibhne. Her research focuses on EU external relations law and EU/UK constitutional law, examining the relationship between legal orders and systems. Currently, she is investigating the role of institutional actors and constitutional principles in shaping the EU's evolving presence in international law. Ellie wrote her doctoral thesis on the distinct role of EU Member States in international investment law, drawing from comparative international law and EU constitutional perspectives. She completed her doctoral studies at Queen Mary University of London, where she also taught EU law and UK Public Law. Additionally, she has conducted research for international organisations and contributed to EU-funded projects in trade, environment, and human rights. Ellie is a member of the editorial team for the UK Association European Law (UKAEL) blog. Earlier in her career, she practiced law in Athens, Greece, specializing in energy, environmental compliance, and public procurement, and is a qualified lawyer and member of the Athens Bar Association.
