Biography

Eleftheria Roumeli joined the Department of Materials Science and Engineering at the University of Washington in January 2020 as an Associate Professor. She previously held postdoctoral positions at the California Institute of Technology and ETH Zurich, focusing on innovative biocomposite materials leveraging plant cells and architected nanocomposite materials. Roumeli received her B.S. in Physics (2009) and Ph.D. in Physics (2014) from Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, Greece. Her doctoral research was centered on identifying structure-property relationships in synthetic polymer nanocomposite materials. Her research interests lie in engineering high-performance polymer nanocomposite materials by examining fundamental structure-processing-properties relationships, with an emphasis on mechanical and thermal properties. Roumeli's group focuses on bio-engineered polymer nanocomposites from renewable resources, utilizing the natural abilities of plants and algae to fabricate intricate hierarchical structures. They are also developing low-energy processing methods to design sustainable alternatives to synthetic polymers. Roumeli's work contributes to fundamental understanding at the nanoscale, opening avenues for sustainable high-performance materials.
