Professor Dr. Elen Maarja Trell Zuidema

Biography

Elen-Maarja Trell-Zuidema is an Associate Professor at the University of Groningen, specializing in resilient sustainable communities. Her research emphasizes place-making and the role of collective action, focusing on citizen initiatives, participatory governance, and protest movements. She explores themes such as agro-food movements, food democracy, community resilience, and climate change adaptation. With extensive experience in qualitative, participatory, and visual research methods, she has published in numerous international peer-reviewed journals and edited academic books. Additionally, she collaborates on research reports aimed at practitioners, emphasizing community-based and action-oriented approaches to sustainability. Trell-Zuidema is also the Coordinator of the Double Degree Master in Water and Coastal Management and leads the Coastal Resilience Research Group, contributing significantly to academic discussions on community resilience in the context of climate change and social well-being.
