Biography

Elena Battaglia is a Ph.D. candidate in Italian Linguistics at the Università della Svizzera italiana. She is actively involved in a research project funded by the Swiss National Science Foundation (SNSF), focusing on the categorization of information sources in face-to-face interaction, utilizing the TIGR corpus of spoken Italian. Elena obtained her Bachelor’s degree in Modern Languages and Literatures from the University of Milan in 2018 and her Master’s degree in Linguistics from the University of Lille in 2020. She has experience as a lecturer in Oral Linguistics at the University of Lille and has recently been a visiting scholar at the Department of Linguistics of KU Leuven in 2023. Her research interests encompass evidentiality, argumentation, and epistemicity interaction, with a particular emphasis on sequences of agreement and disagreement, grammar-in-interaction, and discourse markers. Her doctoral dissertation investigates how verbal references to sources of information emerge in Italian spontaneous conversations, merging typological functional research with an interactional approach to spoken language.
