Dr. Elena Cooper

Biography

Elena Cooper is a Senior Research Fellow at CREATe, the copyright law research centre at the School of Law, University of Glasgow. She joined CREATe in 2014 and has since been involved in a series of significant projects. Elena is an active member of the British Art Network and the Institute of Art and Law. She became a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts in 2020 and of the Royal Historical Society in 2021. Her current research project, funded by the Leverhulme Trust, is focused on uncovering the role of criminal law in intellectual property law with a completion date set for January 2025. Alongside her research, she has chaired the trademark history strand at several seminars. Her 2018 monograph, "Art Modern Copyright: Contested Image," provides a detailed analysis of the history of artistic copyright across a significant historical timeframe. Elena has written extensively on the intersection of art and copyright, with her works appearing in prestigious journals and contributing to conferences across the globe. Furthermore, she has a robust academic presence through her teaching, where she emphatically explores complex areas such as copyright law and its historical implications. Her educational background includes a PhD in law from Cambridge University, where she focused on the history of photographic copyright law.
