Biography

Elena Litchman is a faculty member in the Department of Global Ecology at the Carnegie Institution for Science and holds a courtesy professorship in the Department of Earth System Science at Stanford University. Prior to her position at Carnegie, she was a Foundation Professor at Michigan State University. Litchman received her undergraduate degree from Moscow State University in Russia and went on to earn her Ph.D. in Ecology from the University of Minnesota. An accomplished ecologist, her research interests include community assembly, resilience, eco-evolutionary responses of microbial communities to changing environments, anthropogenic global change, and the consequences of community changes on biodiversity, biogeochemical cycles, and ecosystem functioning. Litchman conducts research across a wide range of systems, including freshwater lakes, oceans, gut microbiota, and algal biofuel communities. Her methodological approaches involve experiments, field work, and data analyses to address fundamental and applied questions in ecology and environmental science. She has received several prestigious awards, including the G. Evelyn Hutchinson Award from the Association for the Sciences of Limnology and Oceanography (ASLO), the Petersen Foundation Excellence Professorship Award from the Helmholtz Center for Ocean Research in Germany, and the Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers (PECASE) as well as the NSF CAREER Award.
