Biography

Elena Martinez is a Professor at the University of California, San Diego, specializing in the Department of Family Medicine and Public Health, Division of Preventive Medicine. She holds the Sam M. Walton Endowed Chair in Cancer Research and co-leads the Reducing Cancer Disparities Program at the Moores Cancer Center. Dr. Martinez earned her Ph.D. in Epidemiology and a Master's degree in Public Health. Her research is extensively focused on epidemiology, molecular epidemiology, and cancer prevention, with a particular emphasis on breast cancer among Hispanic women. Currently, she serves as the co-Principal Investigator on an NCI-funded UO1 grant that investigates epidemiologic and epigenetic features of breast tumors occurring during the postpartum period in Hispanic women. In addition to her research, she teaches various courses related to health behavior and global health policy at UC San Diego.
