Dr. Elena Simperl

Biography

Elena Simperl is a Professor of Computer Science at King's College London, where she co-directs the King's Institute of Artificial Intelligence and serves as the Director of the Research Open Data Institute. She is a Fellow of the British Computer Society and the Royal Society of Arts. Her research focuses on the intersection of artificial intelligence and social computing, highlighting her contributions to knowledge engineering and AI applications in public engagement. Elena co-chairs the Croissant working group within ML Commons, advancing open standards for data portability and discovery in AI. She is also the president of the Semantic Web Science Association. With a robust background in knowledge graphs, human social computation, and human-centric AI, she actively supports projects aimed at improving the interaction between citizens and technology. Simperl's work has been recognized as influential, being ranked among the top 100 scholars in knowledge engineering over the past decade, particularly notable as a woman in AI with a 2000 ranking. Throughout her career, she has focused on harnessing AI for societal benefit, exemplified through her various interdisciplinary research initiatives in Europe and her contributions to community-based data sharing projects.
