Biography

Elia Formisano received his MSc degree in Electronic Engineering in 1996 from the University of Naples, Italy, and earned his PhD in Bioengineering through the Italian national program in 2000. He was a visiting research fellow at the Max Planck Institute for Brain Research in Frankfurt/Main from 1998 to 1999, supported by an outgoing grant. In January 2000, he was appointed Assistant Professor at Maastricht University in the Faculty of Psychology and Neuroscience and currently holds the position of Professor of Neural Signal Analysis, a role he has held since 2011. From 2008 to 2013, he served as the Head of the Department of Cognitive Neuroscience and is a co-founder and scientific director of the Maastricht Brain Imaging Center (MBIC), where he also serves as Principal Investigator for the Auditory Perception Cognition research section. He founded the AuditoRy Cognition Humans MachInEs (ARCHIE) research initiative and is a founding member and research program leader at the Maastricht Center for Systems Biology (MaCSBio), where he is the Principal Investigator of the Brightlands Institute for Smart Society (BISS). His research focuses on uncovering the neural computational basis of human auditory perception and cognition, pioneering the use of ultra-high magnetic field functional MRI (7 Tesla) and applying machine learning and AI to neuroscience studies of audition. His work has been published in prestigious journals, including Science, Nature Neuroscience, Nature Reviews Neuroscience, Neuron, Nature Communications, Nature Human Behaviour, PNAS, and Current Biology. With over 25 years of teaching experience, Elia has developed courses and curricula for bachelor and master graduate levels, focusing on cognitive neuroscience, neuroimaging, and biomedical engineering.
