Biography

Elias Towe is the Albert & Ethel Grobstein Professor and a University Professor at Carnegie Mellon University. He serves as the Director of the National Science Foundation Quantum Computing Information Technologies (QCiT) Center. Before joining Carnegie Mellon in late 2001, he was a Program Manager at DARPA, where he led programs in photonics electronics and the VLSI Photonics Program, focusing on first-generation large-scale optical interconnects. Towe received his S.B., S.M., and Ph.D. degrees from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). He has been recognized as a member of the National Academy of Engineering for his contributions to the field. Towe's research group investigates basic optical quantum phenomena and the applications of novel photonic devices to enable a new generation of information-processing systems, including communication, computation, and sensing. They focus on constructing test beds for quantum processors based on quantum-dot qubits and developing quantum networks for sensing and communication.
