Elie Canetti is a Senior Lecturer in the Department of International Economics at Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies. He teaches courses on Macroeconomics, International Financial Markets, International Financial Organizations, and International Monetary Systems. With over 26 years of experience at the International Monetary Fund (IMF), he served as an advisor in the Western Hemisphere Department and was mission chief for Trinidad and Tobago as well as St. Vincent and the Grenadines. He directed the Caribbean Regional Financial Project, a joint initiative with Caribbean financial authorities. Prior to his role in the Western Hemisphere Department, Canetti spent nine years in the IMF’s Monetary Capital Markets Department where he led the Financial Sector Assessment Program for the Bahamas and managed the IMF’s multilateral financial sector surveillance. He also contributed to the Global Financial Stability Report from 2005 to 2009 and worked with the Financial Stability Board’s Analytical Group on Vulnerabilities. His early career included positions as a country desk officer in the Asia Pacific Department during the Asian financial crisis and as an emerging market analyst at PIMCO. Canetti holds graduate degrees in economics from Princeton University and the London School of Economics, and an undergraduate degree in political economy from the University of California at Berkeley. Additionally, he is an accomplished jazz pianist, performing regularly in the Washington D.C. area.
