Biography

Elin Hartelius is an Associate Professor in the Department of Communication Studies at the Moody College of Communication, University of Texas at Austin. Her research focuses on rhetorical theory and criticism, particularly the cultural and political implications of expertise and the construction of knowledge in public discourse. Hartelius investigates how experts and laypersons articulate their experiences, which shapes entry points into public discourse both in traditional and virtual spaces. She is the award-winning author of 'The Rhetoric of Expertise' and editor of 'The Rhetoric of U.S. Immigration: Identity, Community, Otherness.' Her scholarship has appeared in several academic journals including Argumentation and Advocacy, Critical Studies in Media Communication, Culture, Theory, Critique, Management Communication Quarterly, Journal of Speech, Review of Communication, Rhetoric Society Quarterly, and Southern Communication Journal. Her current book project, 'Gifting Logos: Expertise in Digital Commons,' further explores the cultural epistemology surrounding digital networks.
