Biography

Professor Elio Riboli is the Chair of Cancer Epidemiology and Prevention at Imperial College London. He is the Founding Director of the Cancer Epidemiology Prevention Research Unit, which he jointly established with the Imperial College Institute for Cancer Research. His work has significantly impacted the fields of epidemiology and cancer prevention to combat chronic illnesses. Before joining Imperial, he worked with the International Agency for Research on Cancer under the World Health Organization, where he initiated groundbreaking research on the role of diet and nutrition in metabolic health and cancer causation. He designed and led the establishment of the largest international population cohort studies on nutrition and cancer, the European Prospective Investigation into Cancer and Nutrition (EPIC), which recruited half a million participants and developed a rich biobank of blood samples. After moving to Imperial College, he continued to lead research on modifiable lifestyle-related cancer risk factors and components of metabolic syndrome. His contributions to cancer epidemiology and public health have been recognized through his election as an Honorary Fellow of the Faculty of Public Health of the Royal College of Physicians and as a Fellow of the Academy of Medical Sciences. He has held leadership positions at the School of Public Health, where he has significantly increased the output of teaching and research. He has been honored with awards such as the Imperial College Medal and was made an Officer of the Order of the Star of Italy for promoting British-Italian relations through science and research.
