Biography

Eliot Raynor received undergraduate degrees in Linguistics and Spanish from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 2003. He went on to earn a Master's degree in Spanish from the University of South Carolina in 2009. Currently, he is a PhD candidate in Hispanic Linguistics at Indiana University, having entered candidacy in 2019. His research broadly focuses on the linguistic histories of languages in northwestern Colombia, particularly during the 16th to 18th centuries. He explores the speakers of Amerindian and West African languages who have influenced and left significant linguistic and cultural imprints on the Spanish language, contributing to its development to the present day. In 2022, Raynor co-authored an article in the Journal of Ibero-Romance Creoles that discusses the agency of Amerindians and Africans in the emergence of highland varieties of Spanish in Colombia and Bolivia. He is currently serving as the treasurer for the Society for Pidgin and Creole Linguistics. Beyond his academic work, Eliot has partnered with educational institutions such as the Universidad de Córdoba and the Universidad de Caldas in Colombia to facilitate Spanish-English learner interactions and enhance computer-mediated communication among native speakers. His diverse experiences also include working as an adult ESL instructor, immigration paralegal, and bilingual family counselor with Habitat for Humanity.
