Biography

Elisa Alvarez-Curto studied her undergraduate degree in her homeland Spain before moving to Leiden, Netherlands, to complete her PhD in Developmental Biology and Cell Signalling. During her PhD, her supervisor relocated to the University of Dundee, which required her to adapt to significant changes in her career. She subsequently moved to the University of Glasgow in 2007, where she worked as a Postdoctoral Researcher in Molecular Pharmacology until early 2020. Her research focused on understanding molecular pharmacology of G protein-coupled receptors in health and disease. On 8 April 2020, she was seconded with a handful of other University of Glasgow volunteers to help set up the first high-throughput COVID-19 clinical testing lab in Scotland, the Lighthouse Lab in Glasgow. Within 20 days of the lab's inception, the team was processing live samples and reporting results to the public, highlighting the significant impact scientists can have on society. After a year working at the Lighthouse Lab, she joined the School of Life Sciences as a Lecturer in Pharmacology in September 2021, where she develops and teaches areas related to Molecular Pharmacology.
