Biography

Elisa Ballabio is a PhD student at the University of Geneva, focusing on the intersection of metaphysics, physics, and mathematics. Her doctoral project, supervised by Christian Wüthrich and Baptiste Le Bihan, investigates the ontological problem of the emergence of space-time in quantum gravity. She examines what space-time is, how it emerges from a non-spatiotemporal level, and the nature of that non-spatiotemporal level. Ballabio studies the nature of mathematics and its role in the emergence of space-time through percolation theory, utilizing it as a mathematical tool to deepen the understanding of emergent phenomena. Additionally, she serves as a teaching assistant responsible for practical work in the philosophy of sciences for the 2024 fall semester at the University of Geneva and has previously worked as a teaching assistant at EPFL.
