Biography

Elisa Dainese is a historian and theorist specializing in architecture and urbanism. Her work examines the intersections of modern ideas of habitation and constructions of indigeneity in knowledge production. Her research and teaching focus on twentieth and twenty-first century architecture, exploring non-Western modernisms and Indigenous cultures, as well as examining the implications of race, gender, and power in design disciplines. Dainese is currently completing a publication on the significant role sub-Saharan traditions have played in the historical and conceptual reshaping of modern European and North American architecture from the 1940s to the 1970s. Her book projects include a manuscript titled "War Diaries: Design, Destruction, Art, Architecture," for which she is co-editor with the University of Virginia Press, slated for release in 2022. She has published articles in various journals and received numerous grants and fellowships from prestigious institutions such as Columbia University and the Graham Foundation. Dainese has also actively participated in international conferences and held key roles in the organizing committees for significant architecture events, including the Venice Biennale.
