Biography

Elisa Giardina Papa is an artist scholar and Assistant Professor in the Department of Modern Culture and Media at Brown University. Her research-based art practice investigates forms of knowledge and desire that are lost, forgotten, or rendered nonsensical by hegemonic demands for order and legibility. Giardina Papa's work, which incorporates artificial intelligence-based projects, large-scale video installations, and experimental films, highlights aspects of life that remain radically incomputable. She has exhibited work at prestigious venues, including the 59th Biennale di Venezia and the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA). Her recent art book, 'Leaking Subjects Bounding Boxes: Training AI,' explores current methodologies used to teach artificial intelligence. Additionally, forthcoming essays are set to appear in 'Informatics Domination' from Duke University Press in 2024. Giardina Papa co-founded the artist collective Radha, collaborating with other artists to explore intersections of gender, sexuality, and colonialism. She holds a PhD in Film and Media from the University of California, Berkeley, and has previously held positions at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts at Tufts University and the Rhode Island School of Design.
