Biography

Elisabeth Banon is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Psychiatry at McGill University and a psychoanalyst affiliated with the Canadian Psychoanalytic Society and the International Psychoanalytic Society. She joined the staff of the Jewish General Hospital in July 1997 after completing her fellowship in psychotherapy research. Dr. Banon has a special interest in personality and mood disorders, which led her to establish the Depression Research Clinic, where she serves as the director. Her research involves pilot studies and randomized controlled trials focusing on the efficacy of medium-term psychotherapy combined with medications for recurrent unipolar depression. Dr. Banon's work aims to test hypotheses about how active psychotherapies can reduce the psychological risks associated with depression. She has published six articles, with a significant piece on the outcome of psychotherapy for personality disorders appearing in the American Journal of Psychiatry. In addition to her research, Dr. Banon supervises psychiatric residents in long-term psychodynamic psychotherapy, teaches psychodynamics of depression, and lectures on psychopharmacology and general psychopathology. She also supervises medical students during their core in-patient rotations and serves as an examiner for the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada and the American Boards of Psychiatry and Neurology. In recognition of her contributions to education, she received the Jewish General Hospital-McGill University Henry Kravitz Memorial Teacher Award in 2002.
