Biography

Professor Elisabeth Herrmann specializes in German Studies with a focus on literature and culture from the 18th to 21st centuries. She began her academic journey at the University of Freiburg, earning her Magister Artium in German and Scandinavian Studies and later completing her PhD in Modern German literature. Her research includes a habilitation book on literary and cultural border-crossers. After moving to Canada in 2006, she held a visiting professorship at the University of Alberta supported by a DAAD scholarship. In 2014, she joined Stockholm University as a senior lecturer, becoming a full professor there by 2015. Herrmann's work emphasizes methodological approaches to literary, cultural, transnational, and comparative interdisciplinary studies. In January 2018, she became the Chair of German Studies at the University of Warwick. Her interests include the impact of the Enlightenment, the Holocaust, and contemporary German literature, as well as themes of collective identities, cultural memory, European literatures, transnationalism, cosmopolitanism, and the evolving concept of world literature in response to globalization. Herrmann has also contributed significantly to publications in these fields and has supervised various research projects.
